Support #hoochim by Giving Us Credit for Our Work

We at #hoochim recently became aware that there are individuals selling t-shirts with phrases and acronyms that #hoochim has created and has put in a lot of work to move into the everyday language Hmong people use. These t-shirts and individuals are not associated with #hoochim.

#hoochim has had a t-shirt campaign in the works for a couple of years but it has stalled for some time for various reasons. The t-shirts in the campaign reflect the phrases and acronyms created by #hoochim. We are moving forward with our t-shirt campaign as planned.

Legally, #hoochim does not own the trademarks on phrases and acronyms that we may have created, regularly use, and regularly repeat on our podcast and in individual interactions.

We are ecstatic that #hoochim phrases and acronyms are making its way into the everyday language Hmong people use. We see the usage of most #hoochim phrases and acronyms as important in our work for people to acknowledge Hmong women as full human beings and as a way to interrogate heteropatriarchy in the Hmong community. We believe the more people use the phrases and acronyms, the more we as a people are prompted to think critically about ourselves and our community.

As content creators, we also believe in giving credit when we are aware of where a work, or in this instance phrases and acronyms, originate. Giving credit acknowledges the work of content creators and supports and reaffirms a shared love of community and goals.

We are not asking for people to stop using the phrases and acronyms. We are not even asking for people to stop selling t-shirts with these phrases and acronyms. Our request is that people simply give us credit for our work.
